The circle is a universal symbol with extensive meaning. A circle represents limitless things, among them unity and wholeness. Unity creates a sense of belonging and inclusion. Unity strengthens relationships and develops trust and respect. Being whole is not just a state of mind, it is developing and deciding to live in the fullness of all the areas of your life.

The Gathering Place is, in essence, a circle—a circle of support. Belonging to this circle has many benefits, one of utmost importance being able to lead a full life despite having a disability or addiction. Many people come to The Gathering Place with unfortunate circumstances. They may be experiencing poverty or homelessness. They may have an addiction that is overtaking their lives. Some may be in unhealthy relationships. Some may have faced stigma and discrimination and don't know where to turn. Others are just alone and have nowhere to go. The Gathering Place fills that void. The Gathering Place is a sanctuary. We pride ourselves on providing a safe and trauma-free environment where we, as peers, accept and respect one another. It is an inclusive place conducive to recovery. There are no expectations at The Gathering Place, but we do encourage all who walk through our doors to work on their recovery. Sometimes, recovery is an ambiguous concept. A simple definition of recovery is "moving towards wellness." The Gathering Place promotes recovery through peer support. It is our philosophy and guiding principle. Peer support is powerful! We offer empowering opportunities for learning and growth, such as wellness check-ins, learning of life skills, knowledge on a variety of topics, socialization, advocacy, recreation, creativity, mindfulness, and more. These interactive activities bring out our members' strengths and talents. Some of what we offer is scheduled, and some is spontaneous. Our support groups are a circle of support in themselves. A support group is a safe space to share emotions and experiences with others who understand and won't judge. You can receive reassurance, encouragement, and comfort and learn valuable skills such as listening and empathizing. Our number one guideline is "We will never give up hope!" Sometimes, individuals come to The Gathering Place to just "be." There are vast benefits to that. Being in the presence of others can help to combat isolation. We offer a bottomless cup of coffee and a comfortable chair to kick back in. In the beginning, engaging in small talk or making eye contact may be challenging. That is okay. You don’t have to. Start small. Start by saying hello to someone sitting next to you. Introduce yourself. Maybe strike up a conversation. It may take several visits, but the hope is that you can make a connection with someone who can help you overcome adversities and struggles.
Healing from a psychiatric condition takes time. Healing takes on many forms. There is a sense of loss. It may be the loss of relationships. (This is where peer support at The Gathering Place comes in.) Perhaps the loss of a close friend or a loved one. There maybe a grieving period, as there is a loss of self and identity. “What would my life be like if I didn’t have this disability, (or addiction)?”
The reality of it all is that we only have one life. Disability or not, let's make it a goal to lead a life of wholeness, purpose, and meaning. Peer support is so powerful that it can help you do just that. Follow in the footsteps of your peers who have found healing and set the example that they are not defined by their diagnosis or addictive behavior.Don't hesitate. Join a circle with extensive meaning. Gain a sense of unity, inclusion, and belonging. Reap the benefits of being part of The Gathering Place circle of support. Nothing to sign up for, just come and be! No expectations.
